With so many websites popping up on a
daily basis, one thing is certain. Content needs to
be the number one priority for any webmaster to get
working on right away. However many webmasters tend
to put this on a lower pedestal and treat it as less
important than making the site a flashy eye-candy
filled feast. The reason great website content
should be placed at the highest level is relatively
simple… The Search Engines Feed From It!
All search engines have one thing in
common and basically work the same. They spider the
web for information, and the more information they
find on a particular subject on any given site the
better. They tend to rank a site for search terms
related to the content. In other words if you have
2000 pages of original content relating to Website
Gurus and your competitor only has 1000 pages of
original content about Website Gurus; it pretty much
guarantees your site will be ranked higher in the
search engines for the terms “Website Gurus” once it
becomes established.
With that being said most search
engines such as Google, MSN, ASK and Yahoo use
algorithms which also affects it’s search rankings
by adding or taking away points for age of website,
how often the site is updated, amount of similar
sites linking to yours, and much more. The fact is,
a person could go on for a full day naming all of
the little things they may or may not award ranking
points for and not be able to name them all.
So, what is a webmaster to do since
turning-back time and starting the site up at an
earlier date is not an option? As stated earlier,
it is relatively simple. Just make sure you have
more original content on the topic at hand than your
competitor does; update the site on a regular basis,
and build your links from other reputable sites
which cover the same industry as your own. The cost
is minimal but the results will maximize the overall
success of your website.
